The
Council of Scottish Armigerous Clans and Families is a body consisting
of the heads of individual Armigerous Families, one from each Armigerous
Clan. Members sit on the Council by right of their election by the other
armigers of their respective Clans. Scots armigers who do not sit on the
Council may join as 'Associate Members' and organisations or individuals
may join as 'Supporting Members'. Please refer to the
Membership page
for more details
A Scots Armiger is a person who is in lawful possession of a coat of
arms either granted or re-matriculated by the Lord Lyon, King of Arms.
In Scotland, an Armigerous family are those who descend from the first
bearer of a coat of arms and are entitled to bear either undifferenced
or differenced versions of those arms, either by inheritance, through
re-matriculation with the Lyon Court or by courtesy right.
An Armigerous Clan loosely consists of a group of Armigerous families,
who either have, or claim common descent, which generally share a common
surname and whose armorial bearings are based roughly on the same design
or stem arms, but for whatever reason the Clan does not have a Chief, as
the Lord Lyon has not recognised any member of the Armigerous Clan as
possessing the undifferenced Chiefly arms. Please refer to the
About the Council
page for more information.
The
primary aims of the Council, as outlined in our draft Constitution, are
as follows:
| |
• To
unite and represent Scots Armigers of Scottish Armigerous Clans and
Families which do not have a Chief recognised by the Lord Lyon, King
of Arms of Scotland for whatever reason.
• To
support and advise those Scots Armigers of Armigerous Scottish Clans
and Families and are actively seeking recognition as a Clan from the
Lord Lyon, King of Arms through due legal process and to enter into
dialogue with other bodies, such as the Standing Council of Scottish
Chiefs and the Lyon Court, on the process relating to the recognition
of clans where required.
• To
consult and lobby on all matters affecting the official recognition of
Scottish Clans.
• To
take steps to protect the titles, honours, territorial designations,
armorial bearings or other insignia of council members from misuse.
• To
set standards of best practice amongst Council Members relating to
adherence to the Law of Arms of Scotland, Clan customs and traditions
and the promotion of active and well organised Clan and Family
organisations. |

The
Council is in the process of forming into an organised body and we are
currently consulting on our draft Constitution and welcome the views,
comments and suggestions of all interested parties. The Consultation
period is due to end on 31 March 2010. Thereafter, our first Annual
General Meeting will be held to ratify the Constitution and the first
Council will be appointed.
We look forward to hearing your views. |
